Although for many bettors the urge of wagering on the favorite is too good to pass up because the odds are more promising, betting the underdog also has its advantages. As we noted earlier it costs less to wager on an underdog and has a higher reward. As a sports bettor your main goal should be to find the best way to make money. Even though favorites have a higher win percentage over all, they also have a bigger risk then underdogs.

Basically, if one of your favorites loses, you have to risk more to gain back the money you lost. On the contrary if one of your underdog wagers loses, chances are your buying low anyways, so you can just continue to do so on other underdogs. When you bet baseball lines you should look at lines where the sportsbook inflates the odds for the favorite but also provides value for the underdog.

Favorable Situations for Betting the Underdog:

One study has shown that over a seven year span, underdogs have done considerably better in divisional games than when specific underdogs face the rest of the league. For instance, in divisional games over the last seven years, underdogs have accumulated a record or 3414 games won and 4513 games lost. However, when measuring units won in that span the underdog has a +191.

As we mentioned earlier, underdogs facing teams outside their division have more difficulty. The same study from before shows that underdogs playing teams outside their division have totaled a win loss record of 4401-6434 with 341 units lost.
