The start time of baseball games has a huge affect on the betting totals. Games played during the day are more likely to go over the totals as the players feel fresher and give an extra effort. Conversely, games at night are more likely to be under the total as a result of fatigue and having a harder time seeing the ball.
Online betting enthusiasts new to baseball should feel safe on day time totals while remaining cautious at night. One theory for daytime games going over the total is that the weather had less of an effect on the ball. In essence, during the day the air is thinner which allows for the ball to carry more when it is hit. Conversely hitting the ball when there is more pressure in the air made it twice as difficult to have the ball carry during overnight games, which led to more pop ups.
Two betting systems came out using the above theory one for the day and one for the night. Firstly, it was believed that if two pitchers who based there games on finesse pitches such as the knuckleball were pitching in the day, it was a safe bet to go over the total. The idea was that because the pitchers did not throw hard, they were more likely to have their pitches get caught up with the thin air, resulting in a lot of hits.
On the contrary was the night theory in which two pitchers who get a lot of strikeouts such as Tim Lincecum of the Giants and Zack Greinke of the Royals, would be better in night games because the batters would have a harder time picking up the pitches. When the two systems were first created in the early part of the decade they made a lot of bettors quite rich. However with more variables being added by the day, the systems produce less profit.
