patrick-sharpFans participating in Stanley Cup betting for the first time, should be cautious when choosing the Blackhawks to win the cup after going up two games to none last night. Like UFC 116 betting its not over till the bell rings. In 1971, the Blackhawks went up two games to none on the Montreal Canadiens before losing in seven games to the Hab’s. As well the Hawks have not one a Stanley Cup in 49 years, and fans betting on this Hawks team, should take the drought into consideration. As well, being down by two and perhaps even three games is no big deal to this Philadelphia Flyers club which battled back against another original six team, the Boston Bruins in round two to win that series after being down three games to none.

Conversely, not all is doom and gloom in Chicago, as after all they are up two games to none in this series, and in the Western Conference finals, were able to sweep the top seeded San Jose Sharks in four games. With a drought lasting almost half a century, Blackhawk fans and NHL fans in general, hope the team can finally end the drought. Anti Niemi, appears to be a man possessed in these playoffs, and big offseason acquisition Marian Hossa finally scored last night. If Hossa can get hot, he may be able to dispose of his own personal curse.

Hossa although on three different teams, has been to the final three times, including this year. In 2007-2008, Hossa was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins squad, which was defeated by the Detroit Red Wings for Lord Stanley’s mug. After that season, Hossa jumped ship to the Wings believing they would repeat as champions, while only signing a one year deal with the squad. Hossa was partially right as the team did in fact make it to the finals again, before being defeated by Hossa’s former squad the Penguins. This year, Hossa signed a 12 year contract with the Hawks and in year one of the contract, has returned to the Cup finals, with the hope that the third time is the charm in capturing the cup.

With Hossa perhaps heating up at the right time, and the Blackhawks strong play over the first two games of the Stanley Cup finals, Hawks fans and players alike are hoping a second consecutive sweep can end the drought. Aside from the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs, at 43 years without a cup, the Blackhawks are the most deserving squad to win the cup since they have waited 49 years.
